Colin L. Powell (Born 1937)
Colin Luther Powell was born in New York, New York. He is an American statesman and a retired four-star general in the United States Army. He was the 65th United States Secretary of State, serving under President George W. Bush. Powell graduated from the City College of New York in 1958 and earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the George Washington University in 1971.
During his military career, Powell served as National Security Advisor, as Commander of the United States Army Forces Command, and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which he held during the Gulf War. Powell was a captain during the Vietnam War, serving as a South Vietnamese Army advisor from 1962 to 1963. He was the first African American to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Powell's years of service spanned from 1958 through 1993 and his awards included four Defense Distinguished Service Medals, two Army Distinguished Service Medals, one Defense Superior Service Medal, two Legion of Merits, one Soldier's Medal, one Bronze Star, and one Purple Heart.
