ohn A. Wickham, Jr. (Born 1928)
John Adams Wickham, Jr. was born in Dobbs Ferry, New York. He is a retired United States Army General who was United States Army Chief of Staff from 1983 to 1987. After graduating from the United States Military Academy in 1950, Wickham was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 18th Infantry Regiment and later the 6th Infantry Regiment in Berlin.
Wickham served as operations officer of the 1st Battle Group, 5th Cavalry, in Korea. While in Vietnam, Wickham commanded the 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Division, in combat where he was seriously injured. He later returned to Vietnam as the Deputy Chief of Staff, MACV, and was responsible for negotiating release of all prisoners of war.
Wickham's years of service spanned from 1950 through 1987 and his awards included two Silver Stars, one Bronze Star, one Purple Heart, 11 Air Medals, four Legions of Merit, and eight Distinguished Service Medals (Defense, Army, Navy and Air Force). In addition, he was named by Army Times as one of the ten leaders who most changed the Army.
