Earle G. Wheeler (1908 - 1975)
Earle Gilmore "Bus" Wheeler was born in Washington, D.C. He was a United States Army General who served as Chief of Staff of the United States Army and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the Vietnam War. After graduating from the United States Military Academy in 1932, he was commissioned into the infantry.
During Wheeler's career, he served in senior staff positions in a variety of specialties, including supply, intelligence, planning, and armor. In addition, Wheeler was the longest-serving chairman of the Joint Chiefs to date, serving six years.
Wheeler's years of service spanned from 1932 through 1970 and his awards included one Army Distinguished Service Medal, one Defense Distinguished Service Medal, one Legion of Merit, and one Bronze Star
