Ben Harrell was born in Medford, Oregon, March 15, 1911. He graduated from the Military Academy on June 13, 1933. General Harrell was responsible for formulating tactical plans for the amphibious landings in North Africa in November 1942; for mounting the invasion convoy of more than 1000 ships.
In the invasion of Southern France General Harrell took command of the Seventh Infantry Division and captured Strasbourg, Germany in December, 1944. At the age of 37 he won his parachutist's badge and following he became the Chief of Staff of the 511th Airborne Regiment in 1950.
After a year as a student at the National War College he became the Chief of Staff for the U.S. Commander in Berlin in August 1953. He was then assigned to the Pentagon in August, 1955 and was promoted to Brigadier General February, 1956.
On July 6, 1967, General Harrell assumed command of the Sixth United States Army at the Presidio of San Francisco, California.
He died July 26, 1981 in Monterey, California.
