GENERAL BRUCE PALMER, JR

Bruce Palmer, Jr. (1913 - 2000)

Bruce Palmer, Jr. was born in Austin Texas. He was a United States Army General, who served as Chief of Staff of the United States Army from July to October 1972. After graduating from the United States Military Academy in 1936, Palmer was commissioned a second lieutenant and served with the 8th Cavalry at Fort Bliss, Texas. He graduated from the Fort Riley Cavalry School in 1940.

During World War II, Palmer was chief of staff of the 6th Infantry Division in Southwest Pacific operations from 1944 to 1945. Palmer also served during the Vietnam War, where he commanded the II Field Force and was deputy commander of the United States Army in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. General Palmer was called upon to serve as acting Chief of Staff of the Army for four months in 1972.

Palmer's years of service spanned from 1936 through 1974 and his awards included five Army Distinguished Service Medals, one Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, one Silver Star, one Legion of Merit, one Bronze Star, and one Air Medal. He was also awarded the director of central intelligence's National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal.
