Lieutenant General Albert P. Clark was born August 27, 1913 in Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. Upon graduation he served at Selfridge Field, Michigan, and then went to England as second in command of the 31st Fighter Group, the first American fighter unit in the European Theater of Operations.
He was shot down over Abbeville, France, in July 1942 and was a prisoner of war until April 1945.
After WWII he progressed through key staff assignments with Tactical Air Command, Continental Air Command and Air Defense Command Prior to a tour of duty at Headquarters U.S. Air Force.
He commanded the 48th Fighter Bomber Wing at Chaumont Air Base in France (1955-1956), and then served as chief of staff of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe.
He then served as Chief of the U.S. Military Training Mission to Saudi Arabia; director of military personal at Headquarters U.S. Air Force (1959- 1963); Commander of the 313th Air Division, Okinawa; Vice Commander of the Tactical Air Command (1965); Commander of the Air University (1968); Superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy (1970).
His medals include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (One Oak Leaf Cluster), Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal and the Purple Heart.
He retired August 1, 1974 and died March 8, 2010 at the age of 96.
